Soil and Groundwater Pollution
Course description
This course gives participants an understanding of the important groundwater processes related to soil and groundwater pollution. The course reviews the fundamentals of groundwater hydrology, and the mechanisms of soil and groundwater contamination. Different types of contaminants are considered, including LNAPLs (light non-aqueous phase liquids) and DNAPLs (dense non-aqueous phase liquids).
Case studies are extensively used to explore the different concepts. Course content thoroughly covers site characterisation and remediation options (including natural attenuation), focusing on methods that are most suitable for different contaminant types. General principles of risk assessment are also discussed. Attendees are led through the process of selecting and designing remediation systems based on geological, chemical, and biological factors, as well as an in-depth study of the integration of risk into the remediation process.
Who should attend?
The course is principally aimed at groundwater consultants, engineers, project managers and regulators in the public and private sectors. A solid understanding of the principles of groundwater flow is desirable; however, the course introduces all the required concepts pertaining to Soil and Groundwater Pollution from first principals.
